The Water Demand Calculator and 2050 Partners in the New York Times
The New York Times recently published an article discussing the prevalence of oversized plumbing pipes in the United States and the need to reduce water consumption in times of increasing drought. The main water-saving strategy highlighted in the article is adoption of the Water Demand Calculator, which 2050 Partners is proud to be supporting through field studies and building code advocacy.
Earlier this year, 2050 Partners co-authored a study detailing the water, energy, and construction cost savings that can be realized by using the Water Demand Calculator to estimate peak water demand in single family and multifamily dwellings. As mentioned in the New York Times, this study shows that traditional methods for estimating design peak flow rates “overestimate measured peak flow rates by a factor of 10 or more on average.”
To date, the Water Demand Calculator has been adopted for optional use in 10 states, including California, Washington, and New Jersey. To learn more about 2050 Partners’ advocacy efforts and the benefits of using the Water Demand Calculator, we encourage you to read the full New York Times article at this link.
